People have mentioned that cilantro is known by coriander in most countries outside of the United States. However, to the staff at IHateCilantro.com, cilantro (the leaves of the coriander plant) taste way different than coriander (the seeds). In fact, ground coriander, as a spice, is reminiscent of dried spices like cumin, cloves or nutmeg. As far as herbs, to us, it's similar to basil or oregano. However, this is not to say that the opinions of the staff at IHC are in any way correct or final.

i agree, i actually really like the taste of corriander (as a spice)..but if you put a cilantro leaf anywhere near me or in my food i will spit it out and gag..i hate it!
I'm living in Serbia for a few months and I can't find cilantro anywhere here. There doesn't seem to be a word for cilantro in their language. When I describe it as the leaf of a cilantro plant, then they understand, but still no one knowns where to get it here.
Those who say they hate "cilantro" leaves have never been to the Centre-South Portugal, where it is widely used in soups and stews (or chopped and sprinkled on top of the stew), and IS WOUNDERFUL!
... and way better than the dried seeds! :P
of course, if you prefer grease in the form of burgers and fries, go on, leave all the "cilantro" (coriander) for me! :D
BTW, chopped coriander leaves cut the greesy taste of those burgers and fries, you should try that if there is any live taste bud left in your mouth!
Hey Le Chef: CILANTRO IS HORRIBLE, can't you taste it? Don't tell me you really do not feel like you are eating a stinkbug everytime you put something with cilantro in your mouth. Come on! Oh, and by the way, leave prejudices aside: you do not need to be American, eat only junk food and have not knowledge of what good food is to hate cilantro. I am not American, my second career is in Culinary Arts and I've never gone to McDonalds in my whole life. And I still believe that cilantro is the meanest herb on this planet.

It is like putting a stink bug in your mouth, just thinking about the horrible thing makes me want to burn all the fields!
In Australia it is known as coriander. Coriander seeds are coriander seeds. Also known as flat leaf parsley. (Don't be fooled!!!)
I used to hate parsley because they put it on everything here, now I would prefer it if they put parsley on everything because I don't know how many meals have been ruined by coriander!!!
I gag on the stuff. Death to coriander!!!
It's hard to believe that coriander, a perfectly respectable spice, could possibly come from the same plant as that disgusting so-called "herb", cilantro. I've used coriander seeds in BBQ rubs and southwest spice blends, where they give a nice depth of flavor to the mix. It's a mistake to ascribe cilantro's horrifying attributes to the seeds of the coriander plant.
The main difference is coriander does not taste or smell like mildew. I think it's an acquired taste, but not a nasty taste. I just don't get cilantro love. Might as well lick the basement wall.
(And I don't eat McDonald's or other fried food. And I have been to Portugal.)
Coriander comes from heaven, a truely divine little gem. I am talking about the seed, especially when it surprices your taste buds in one of the original Indian pickles. As for the leaves I do understand, I hate to admit it though, those who don't like the taste, it is different. It seems to be a taste as controversial as the smell of tagetes, the orange flower you make garlands of in India.

Three words: California Pizza Kitchen. They put cilantro on EVERYTHING! From soups, to salads, to a three cheese pizza, you'll find shreds of the dreaded cilantro on every dish they offer. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they topped off their cocktails with a liberal sprinkling of the stuff.
