My first experience with coriander was not with coriander! In fact I lived in a place where we had a population of big black cockroaches which gave off a pungent smell when hit, squashed or chopped! Also on occasion, a family member would fail to wash the silverbeet well, and when eating the salad one might bite into a green shield beetle. It gave the same pungency as the cockroach.
Later, I was given fresh coriander in a salad. Well, it was and to this day remains identical to the black cockroach and shield beetle! Seeing as the insects came first, coriander will always be them. I have advise people that if they run out of coriander, just grind up a beetle for the same culinary experience!
I hate the stuff.
